Abstract

Objectives: To study the effect of D-methionine on gastric cancer and its mechanism. Methods: We used a medium with D-methionine to culture six gastric cancer cell lines. The medium with L-methionine acted as control to culture cells. The proliferation of cells was detected by MTT. Apoptotic rates and cell cycle were detected by FMC. Results: Absorbance of all cell lines was significantly lower than control (P0.05), and this difference was more obvious with the development of time. The apoptotic rates of SUN-16, NCI-N87 and SGC-7901 were higher than those in control group (P0.01), and the rates of other cell lines were not significantly different (P0.05). KATO-Ⅲ cells stayed more in G 0 /G 1 phase (P0.05).NCI-N87、AGS、MKN45 and SGC-7901 cells stayed more in S phase (P 0.01 ). Conclusions: The gastric cancer cell lines are methionine dependent. D-methionine can inhibite the proliferation of gastric cancer cells through inducing cells apoptosis and/or arresting cell cycle.
