TS-1 combined with three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy for treatment of advanced esophageal cancer

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and toxicity of TS-1 combined with three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy(3D-CRT) in treatment of advanced esophageal cancer.Fifty-eight patients with advanced esophageal cancer were divided randomly into groups of two: Ts-1 combined with three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy(combined treatment group,32 cases) and single radiotherapy group(26 cases).The fractionated dose of 3D-CRT was 1.8 Gy/f / 5f/w.The total dose was 50.4 Gy/28 f.Combined treatment group received Ts-1 treatment according to surface area 1.2 m2,40 mg bid,1.2-1.5 m2,50 mg bid,1.5 m2,60 mg bid,since the first day of radiotherapy with chemotherapy simultaneously,and administration for 4 weeks followed by a 2-week rest until the end of the radiotheraphy treatment.In the patients of combined group,the rates of complete response,partial response and total response were 5 cases,19 cases and 75.0% respectively.In the patients of single radiotherapy group,they were 2 cases,10 cases and 46.2% respectively.There was statistical significance(P=0.007).As for side effects,both groups enjoy good tolerance as a whole and no severe untoward effect had happened.In conclusion,TS-1 combined with three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy is effective and safe for treatment of advanced esophageal cancer.
