Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the effect of probing and scouring of the lacrimal passage on treatment of the neonatal dacrystitis. Methods: Thirty-six cases( 37 eyes) with neonatal dacryocystitis which had no effect by routine dacryocyst massage with local antibiotics ophthalmic solutions and syringing of lacrimal passages were treated with probing of lacrimal passage. If there was still no effect, probing of the lacrimal passage was not done more than two times. Patients were followed up averagely for 6 months to observe the therapeutic effect and related factors. Results: Thirty-three eyes( 89. 2%)in 37 eyes were cured by probing of the lacrimal passage. The success rate showed a downtrend with age. Conclusion: The treatment of neonatal dacryocystitis should be taken as early as possible. Probing of lacrimal passage is a useful method for neonatal dacrystitis and it has no significant complications. It is simple in operation, which is worth spreading.
