Abstract

Objective To evaluate the effectiveness of probing and scouring of the lacrimal passage in treatment of the neonatal dacrystitis. Methods The probing of the lacrimal passage was performed one time in 140 cases(150 eyes) with neonatal dacrystitis which were ineffiective in dacryocyst massage. If still there was no effect, scouring of the lacrimal passage was done not more than three times. Results Eighteen eyes(12.00%) were cured by probing of the lacrimal passage, and 128 eyes(96.97%) by scouring of the lacrimal passage in 132 eyes. 97.33% neonatal dacrystitis was cured totally. The success rate for children within 6 months was 100%. Above one year, the success rate was only 86.36%. Conclusion Probing and scouring of the lacrimal passage are useful methods for neonatal dacrystitis and which has no significant complications. The earlier the therapy is given, the better the effect is.
