Epidemiological investigation of the first case infected with highly pathogenic human avian influenza in Hubei Province

Abstract

Objective To investigate and analyze the first case of highly pathogenic avian influenza virus infection(H5N1) and offer scientific basis for control of avian influenza infection in humans. Methods Epidemiological survey was carried out included the process of falling ill,possible infection source,transmission route and risk factors,eetc.Strict observation on those closely contacted with the patient was made.Meanwhile the patient treated pathologically examined. Results The patient was confirmed to be infected with highly pathogenic human avian influenza H5N1 virus as ascertained by expert group of Ministry of Health and died.The patient was no exposed to the dead or illed fowl,but to healthy fowl.The avian influenza virus H5N1 was detected from the samples of rhinal and trachea excrete.RNA testing of the trachea excrete sample was positive.No abnormal manifestations were observed among those closely contacted with the patient during strict medical observation. Conclusion The infection source of the patient was inexplicit.The surveillance of the avian influenza epidemic be sterengthened and the risk factors associated with avian influenza virus be surveyed in future.
