Abstract

Objective: To study the effects of aqueous extract of ocimum basilicum on platelet aggregation. Methods: ADP and thrombase were used to induce platelet aggregation and plate function was evaluated by turbidimetry to observe ocimum basilicum effects on platelet aggregation. Results: ocimum basilicum (200,300,500 mg/kg) inhibits platelet aggregation by ADP and thrombase: ocimum basilicum 200 mg/kg had an inhibition rate of 42.93% and 53.81% of platelet aggregation by ADP and thrombase, respectively. Inhibition rates for ocimum basilicum at 300 mg/kg were 60.16%, 60.43%, while ocimum basilicum at a dose of 500 mg/kg inhibits platelet aggregation by ADP and thrombase were 55.34%, 59.41%, respectively. Conclusion: ocimum basilicum possesses an inhibitory effect on platelet aggregation induced by ADP and thrombase.
