Abstract

Objective To evaluate the clinical effect and safety of percutaneous coronary intervention(PCI)in patients with coronary artery disease(CAD)at the age of 75 years or older. Methods Seventy-two patients aged≥75 years(elderly group)who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention were compared with 68 patients aged70 years(control group),between May 2005 and October 2009 in this hospital in lesion characteristics of coronary artery, success rate, severe complications and follow-up for the 12 months by either clinical examination or telephone call.Cox regression was performed to analyze the predictors for the safety of PCI.Results The lesion of coronary artery of the elderly group were more severe than that of the control group(P0.05),stenting rate of the elderly group was lower than that of the control group.Comparing the technical success rates of PCI and angina recidivation, subacute thrombosis, kidney damage by contrast medium,it showed no significant difference(P0.05).The main complication of haemorrhage and cerebral apoplexy had no significant difference between the two groups during 12 months of the follow-up.Furthermore,the cardiac death of elderly group was increased(5.5%).Multivariate analysis indicated that LVEF was the independent predictors for the cardiac death(OR=0.911,95% CI:0.868~0.954,P=0.032).Conclusions PCI was relatively effective and safe in patients with CAD at the age of 75 years or older.
