Application of Blink Reflex and Facial Electroneurogram to Children with Bell Paralysis

Abstract

Objective:The diagnostic significance of blink reflex(BR)and facial electroneurogam(ENoG)in diagnosing Bell palsy in children has been investigated.Methods:Twenty children with Bell paralysis have been examined by using BR and EnoG at days 7-30 after the onset.Results:The ipsilateral R1,R2,and R2' waves were absent in 2 cases.Three cases only showed no R1 waves,and the resting 15 cases showed delayed latencies of R1,R2 and R2' waves.M waves of the facial nerve were absent in 2 cases.And the resting 18 patients displayed delayed M waves with low amplitude.The ratio of R1 latency to M latency indicated 8 cases with paroximal injury,10 with distal injury and 2 with extensive injury.Conclusion:BR can be used as a sensitive parameter for early diagnosis of Bell paralysis in children.BR and ENoG can evaluate the extent and location of injury of the facial nerve.
