Prospective Study on the Relationship of Stroke with Lipids in the City Dwellers of Beijing

Abstract

Objective To explore the relationship of stroke with total cholesterol,triglycerides and high density lipoprotein in the city dwellers of Beijing. Methods In 1987,3 601 people were randomly selected from two communities including more than 100 000 people in Chongwen and Xicheng districts of Beijing,and were examined on their baseline of TC,TG,HDL-C and other risk factors; then,followed forward in 10 yrs for stroke incidence. Results 2 466 people were completely followed up,and stroke occurred in 212 people,including 146 cases of ischemic stroke,62 hemorrhagic stroke and 4 undetermined. Single factor analysis showed that serum TC and TG was risk factors for total stroke,HDL-C was protective factor for both total and ischemic stroke; but multiple factor analysis showed that only HDL-C was the protective factor for total stroke and ischemic stroke. Conclusions HDL-C is the protective factor for stroke,but TC and TG are not the independent risk factors for stroke.
