Abstract

Objective To investigate the changes of serum adiponectin(APN) and the relationship among serum APN,bone mineral density(BMD),and bone turnover biochemical markers in senile male patients with osteoporosis. Methods A total of 89 senile male patients with osteoporosis and 50 healthy senile males were enrolled. The serum APN,bone alkaline phosphatase(BAP),bone gla protein(BGP),and cross-linked N-telopeptides of type I collagen(NTX) were measured using ELISA.BMD of the lumbar vertebrae 2-4 and the left femoral neck was measured using Excell-plus dual energy X-ray absorptiometry(NORLAND,USA).Results BMD of L2-4 and the left femoral neck, serum APN,BAP,and BGP in senile male patients with osteoporosis were significantly lower than those in healthy senile males(P0.01),but serum NTX was significantly higher than that in healthy senile males(P0.01).Serum APN was positively correlated with BMD of L2-4 and the left femoral neck, serum BAP,and BGP in senile patients with osteoporosis(r=0.468,r=0.487,r=0.402,r=0.415,P0.01),but negatively correlated with serum NTX(r=-0.498,P0.01).Conclusion The decrease of serum APN may play an important role in the pathogenesis of osteoporosis in senile male patients.
