Abstract
Objective To explore the changes of serum amylin in elderly male osteoporosis patients and its relationship with bone mineral density and bone turnover biochemical markers. Methods Serum amylin, bone alkaline phosphatase(BAP),bone gla protein(BGP),and cross-linked N-telopeptides of type I Collagen(NTX) in 89 elderly male osteoporosis patients and 50 health elderly males were measured using ELISA,and the BMD of lumbar vertebrae 2-4(L2-L4) and the neck of the femur(Neck) were measured using dual energy X-ray absorptionetry. Results The results showed that BMD of the lumbar vertebrae 2-4 and the neck of the femur, serum amylin,BAP,and BGP in elderly male osteoporosis patients were significantly lower(P0.01) than those in the heath elderly males. However, serum NTX in elderly male osteoporosis patients was significantly higher than that in the heath elderly males(P0.01).Serum amylin in elderly male osteoporosis patients was positively associated with BMD of lumbar vertebrae 2-4,the neck of the femur, serum BAP,and serum BGP(r=0.598,0.652,0.576,0.584,P0.01),respectively.However,serum amylin in elderly male osteoporosis patients was negatively associated with serum NTX(r=-0.673,P0.01).Conclusion The decrease of serum amylin concentration may play an important role in the development of osteoporosis in the elderly males.
