An interaction of discourses: the narrative of The French Lieutenant’s Woman

Varied discourses, represented severally by Sarah, Charles and the narrator, interact positively in The French Lieutenant’s Woman. While the interaction between the character’s discourses produces the histoire, the interaction between the narrator’s discourse and the histoire generates the relatively autonomous literary world. As a result, the interaction of these discourses throws light on the importance of the freedom of choice on the one hand, and on the other demonstrats postmodernist doubt of the distinction between truth and fiction.
