Abstract
The novel The Scholars was closely related to the society of the Ming Dynasty.Why did its author prefer Hongwu(1368-1398) to Yongle(1403-1424)? It was because of the establishment of the system of rites and music in Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty.Moreover,Zhu Di usurped the throne,thus defying the rites of the Zhou Dynasty.Wu Jingzi,author of The Scholars,was against the practice of forming associations,which was very popular in the Yongle period of the Qing Dynasty.Therefore,what has in the novel was set in the Ming Dynasty.
