Abstract
Objective To investigate the relationship between joint effusion and temporomandibular joint internal derangement(TMJID).Methods Oblique sagittal T1 weighted MR imaging at closed and open mouth, and Oblique sagittal T2 weighted MR imaging at closed mouth were obtained from 88 joints of 44 patients who complained of unilateral TMJ pain. Results Of 88 joints,33(37.5%) showed effusion, among which 9(27.3%) had ADDR and 12(36.6%) had ADDWR.Of 55 joints without effusion,8(14.5%) had ADDR and 7((12.8%)) had ADDWR.There were statistical differences in TMJID between joints with and without effusion, even if the minimal effusion was categorized as no effusion. Conclusion Joint effusion may indicate the existence of inflammation induced by abnormal disccondyle relationship.
