Abstract
Objective: To investigate the relationship between temporomandibular joint effusion and joint pain. Methods:Oblique sagittal T2 weighted MR imaging at closed mouth was obtained from 88 joints of 44 patients who complained ofunilateral TMJ pain. The effusion of pain-free side served as self-control. All patients rated their pain levels by a visualanalogue scale (VAS). Results: of 44 painful joints, 26 joints (59.1%) showed effusion. While there had effusion only in7 (15.9%) of 44 pain-free TMJs. There was significant correlation between joint pain and effusion (P0.05), even if theminimal effusion was categorized as no effusion. The mean VAS values were hot statistically different between effusiongroup and effusion-free group, which wore 46.5±25.1 and 39.7±22.8 respectively in au the 44 pain joint . Conclusion:Effusion is one of the factors producing temporomandibular joint pain, but it has no association with pain degree.
