Youtai and Political Situation of Tibet in the Late Qing Dynasty

Youtai was stationed a high commissioner in Tibet by the central government in the Late Qing Dynasty.Facing British invasion of Tibet in 1903-1904,Youtai met the demands of the invaders and helped the invaders with Tibet to sign a treaty of inequality.Consequently Youtai's actions seriously undermined China's sovereignty and interests.Youtai did not have an international perspective and showed the ignorance of the concept of the foreign affairs.However,Youtai' s appointment and promotion were due to nepotism and servility.Youtai' s actions was one of the factors which deteriorated political situation in Tibet from Late Qing Dynasty to an earlier period of the Republic of China.
