Abstract
Objective To study the effects of Lycium barbarum extract on the growth of Rhodobacter sphaeroides. Methods Adding L. barbarum extract into general culture medium at different concentration, the effects of L. barbarum extract on the growth of R. sphaeroides were investigated by culturing R. sphaeroide and comparing living R. sphaeroides bacteria number, growth curve, and dehydrogenase activity.. Results After adding L. barbarum extract into the culture medium, the growth delay period of R. sphaeroides was shortened and the expotential and stationary periods were advanced. When the concentration of L. barbarum extract was 12.5 g/L, the number of living R. sphaeroides was increased in 1.5 times, and the dehydrogenase activity of R. sphaeroides was improved in 3.3 times as much as before. Conclusion When L. barbarum extract is added into the culture medium, the growth and the activity of R. sphaeroides could be improved, and the growth cycle could be shortened.
