Abstract

Objective To observe the expression of β-catenin and APC in normal gastric mucosa, gastric adenoma and gastric cancer tissues,so as to investigate their significance in the carcinogenesis and progression of gastric cancer. Methods One hundred and twenty-six gastric epithelial biopsy specimens diagnosed by histopathology were obtained, including 40 normal gastric mucosa,38 gastric adenomatous polyps(22 high-grade and 16 low-grade intraepithelial neoplasia) and 48 gastric cancer.Expression of β-catenin and APC were detected by avidin-biotin complex(ABC) immunohistochemical method. Results The abnormal expression rates of β-catenin and APC increased progressively from the normal control group to gastric cancer. The difference was statistically significant(P0.05).The correlation of β-catenin and APC in gastric cancer was significant, but it was uncorrelated in gastric adenomas. Conclusion β-catenin and APC play important roles in the carcinogenesis and progression of gastric cancer. The correlation of β-catenin and APC in gastric adenomas is pending and need further research.
