Abstract

Objective To evaluate normal skin sonogram and skin thickness at different sites in adult. Methods Skin sonogram was observed and epidermis plus dermis thickness was measured at 17 sites of body in 60 adult healthy volunteers using a 14 MHz ultrasound probe. Results The 14 MHz high frequency ultrasound showed the structure of skin clearly. The epidermis echo was observed as a strong line smoothly and dermis as a hypoechoic zone.Dermis and subcutaneous tissue boundary were clear or not, depending on different sites. No any blood flow signal in epidermis and dermis was obtained with color Doppler flow imaging sonography. In 17 skin sites, significant difference was found between male and females at 12 sites. Conclusion High-frequency ultrasound is a feasible method for measurement of skin thickness.
