Abstract
Objective To study the effects of low-intensity ultrasound(LIU) on the expression of nerve growth factor(NGF) after sciatic nerve injury in rats. Methods The right sciatic nerves of 64 adult Wistar rats were crushed with forceps for the experimental animal models and they were randomly divided into treatment group and control group. The rats in the treatment group received the LIU exposure, and rats in the control group received with sham exposure. The rats in the two groups were equally subdivided into 4 groups according to the different postoperative interval: 2,4,6,and 8 weeks. At various intervals after surgery, the sciatic nerve stump immediately distal to the crushed site was harvested. The expression of NGF was evaluated by using Immunohistochemistry and image analysis. Results The expression of NGF in the sciatic nerve tissue was higher in LIU group than that of the control group at the fourth, sixth and eighth weeks after surgery. Conclusion LIU can promote the expression of NGF protein after sciatic nerve injuries in rats.
