The Origin of Chinese Artistic Spirits——Xu Fuguan and the rediscovery of Chuang Tzu

Mr.Xu Fuguan,the RTHK Neo-Confucian,has pointed out that the core of Chinese culture is human from which art derives.The author sees Chinese art as a pure spirit which is particularly reflected in ancient China's landscape painting because natural landscape can most represent human nature and freedom of spirit,which is in agreement with Lao Tzu and Chuang Tzu's Tao ideology.Tao is thought to be the supreme state of subject cultivation.In modern cultural context,it is necessary to pursue an authentic way of expressing Chinese art so as to counterbalance the long-standing Western measure of value and to make up the absence of human spirit in modern science and technology.
