The Clinical Observation of Microvascular Decompression for Hemifacial Spasm

Abstract

Objective To investigate the clinical efficacy and surgical method of microvascular decompression for hemifacial spasm.Methods We retrospectively analyzed the files of 52 patients with hemifacial spasm(HFS),who were treated with MVD in our hospital from June 2006 to September 2009,and summarized the surgical skills and clinical efficacy.Result The spasticity immediately disappeared after the surgery in 37 of 52 HFS patients(71.15%),the spasticity disappeared in 2-4 weeks after the surgery in 11 cases(21.15%);the symptoms were relieved in 2 cases(3.85%),and the symptoms could be controlled by oral drugs which would be phased out gradually in 3 months after surgery;there was recurrence in one case(3.85%);and in one case there was no relief after 12 months follow-up survey,determined to be invalid(1.92%).The success rate of MVD was 98.08%(51/52).Conclusion The efficacy of Microvascular decompression surgery treatment of hemifacial spasm was satisfactory.
