Abstract

Performance-based seismic design now is widely studied in earthquake engineering. It is based on performance objectives which could be quantified. Multiple performance and hazard levels could be considered in this process. Based on research work on performance-based seismic design, main research contents are presented. There are several key problems which should be discussed before the procedures for performancebased design can be widely accepted. These problems were studied in this paper. It shows that performancebased seismic design mainly includes performance objectives, general design procedures and performance evaluations. Performance-based seismic design is the trend of future seismic design. The development in performance-based design will be directed towards the definition of performance objectives, a general design methodology and the demand evaluations.
