Abstract
The paper presents a new road net- work design for Wuhan metropolitan area, aiming to help relieve the increasing congestion.First,to help understand the travel demand in today's Wuhan, the particularity and dialectics of its spatial expansion is analyzed from the perspective of urban development strategy.Second, considering the geographi- cal constraints by the rivers and the current travel demand,we propose a road network design that emphasizes within-district trans- portation based on synergetics. This is an im- provement from the existing‘ring plus radial’network that emphasizes more cross-river transportation.Third,we present specific road improvement projects and discuss how the improvement of within-district road infrastruc- ture can help the most head-aching bottlenecks in today's Wuhan.
