Abstract
Objective To study the endothelium-dependent vasodilation function in patients with essential hypertension (EH).Methods B-mode ultrasonography was used to measure the change in diameter of the brachial artery during reactive hyperemia and after sublingual administration of nitroglycerin in 26 patients with EH and 12 matched healthy subjects.Results Despite similar ages, blood lipid and glucose levels in 2 groups, the increased percentage of the brachial artery diameter was lower in patients with EH than that in normal controls (12.53%±4.26% vs 17.76%±6.02%, P0.01) during reactive hyperemia, whereas nitroglycerin-induced changes were similar (19.41%±6.73% vs 21.24%±6.96%, P0.05).Conclusion Impaired endothelium-dependent vasodilation function existed in patients with EH, while without other evidence of atherosclerosis.
