On the Rise of the Modern Scholarly Intellectuals —A Research Based on the Case Study of YAN Fu

This article,taking YAN Fu as an example,discusses a hard progress in the transforming of traditional Chinese learned people into modern intellectuals.The early experiences of studying abroad possessed him a good western background.However this also deprived him of the possibility of entering the traditional mainstream society by taking the imperial examination.The happening of The Hundred Days of Reform provided a wide stage for YAN's western knowledge.After suffering the defeat of the Sino-Japanese War and the Hundred Days of Reform,YAN was deeply disappointed at the traditional political system,which marked an opportunity for YAN to transfer into a modernized intellectual.Finally he found translating and spreading the western knowledge as his lifelong pursuit.Promotion and practice of copyright system ultimately transformed him into a modernized intellectual.
