Clinical significance of ultrasound in diagnosis of thyroid nodule calcification and microcalcification

Abstract

Objective To discuss clinical significanc of ultrasound in diagnosis of thyroid nodule calcification and microcalcification. Methods Selected 121 cases with thyroid nodule were retrospective analyzed.Clinical significance of calcification and microcalcification in differential diagnosis of benign and malignant nodules were analyzed. Results 32 cases showed calcification detected by ultrasound. Among them, 9 cases were malignant,accounted for 28.1%. Among89 cases without calcification,2 cases were malignant,accounted for 2.2%. There were significant differences between two groups(P0.01). Among 21 cases with microcalcification,8 cases were malignant, accounted for 38.1%. Among 11 cases with coarser calcification,1 case was malignant,accounted for 9.1%. There were significant differences between two groups(P0.01). Conclusion Ultrasound for thyroid nodule calcification, especially microcalcification, shows significance in differential diagnosis of benign and malignant nodules.
