Abstract
Objective To study the expression of VEGF-C in tongue cancer and its role in lymphatic metastasis and prognosis. Methods Paraffin-embedded specimens from 56 patients with tongue cancer were examined by immunohistochemical staining. Results Positive immunohistochemical staining for VEGF-C protion was observed in 22 of the 56 patients(39.3%). The VEGF-C antigen was identified in the cytoplasm of cancer cells. The expression of VEGF-C was notably higher in lymph-node-positive group than in node-negative group and was significantly associated with prognosis. Conclusion VEGF-C may play an important role in lymphatic invasion/metastasis and prognosis.
