Abstract

Objective To study the relationship between delayed gastric emptying and midgastric transverse band (MTB).Methods The stomach was divided into the proximal and distal parts through the MTB.The gastric emptying, areas and intragastric distribution were investigated in 60 functional dyspepsia (FD),50 healthy subjects (HS) and 15 HS with more test meal by SPECT technique. Results Delayed gastric emptying and increased gastric remains were observed in the proximal, distal stomach of FD.The half gastric emptying time was prolonged and area of MTB was enlarged on HS with more test meal. The areas of distal stomach and MTB in FD were larger than those on HS from start to finish.Introgastric distribution of the food was obvious in the distal stomach. Conclusion Delayed gastric emptying was related to enlarged area of MTB.Some dyspeptic symptoms may be produced by abnormal distribution and increased storage of food in the distal stomach.MTB regulates transfer, distribution and emptying of food in the stomach. It may be similar to the atrio-ventricular valve in function.
