The change of Wang Tao’s ideology from traditional, orthodox Confucianism to the modern is the typical course taken by the majority of traditional Chinese intellectuals, while his particular life experiences——his acknowledgment of Western learning, his close contacts with Western missionaries, show his own peculiarity.
