Clinical observations on the treatment of duodenal ulcer by acupoint catgut implantation plus Chinese herbs

Purpose To observe the curative effect of acupoint catgut implantation plus Chinese herbs on duodenal ulcer (DU) with Helicobactor pyloris (HP) infection. Methods The treatment group of 172 cases received acupoint catgut implantation and Chinese herbs; the control group of 42 cases took cimetidine tablets and other Western drugs. Results The total effective rate, HP eradication rate and recurrence rate were 97.1%, 89.5% and 8.4% in treatment group and 83.3%, 76.1% and 25.7% in control group. Statistical analysis showed P 0.01 and P 0.05. Conclusion The curative effect of acupoint catgut implantation plus Chinese herbs on DU with HP infection is significantly superior to that of Western medicine. HP eradication rate is significantly higher in treatment group than in control group. The recurrence rate is significantly lower in treatment group than in control group. It is indicated that the long term effect of this therapy is better than that in Western medicine group.
