Abstract
This paper aims to provide some insights into the delicate psychological state and complicated connotation of Shen Congwen's self-styled term “country folk” by combining his progress of advancing into the city. The salutation “Country folk” is his expression of homesick affection and the source of his spiritual support which he needs most. He uses it not only as a revenge weapon to fight against the city but also as a way of cultural compensation to the city. In addition, it embodies his ingrained aesthetic pursuit. More importantly, the connotation of “country folk” is not coherent throughout his life, even fundamentally transformed.
