Zhao Qi's Mencius Chapters has always been considered to be representative of sinology which is characterized by pure and objective explanation of the and which forms a sharp contrast to the Study of Song which is characterized by further extension of the meanings. However, the fact is that Mencius Chapters is an attempt to develop sense while paying attention to meaning of the text and conbining explanations with metaphors. Therefore, it is the beginning of the combination of methodological hermeneutics and philosophical hermeneutics.
