Abstract

As a representative and an advocate of the translation theory of deconstructionism, the Italian-born American scholar Lawrence Venuti's ideas on translation have in recent years attracted worldwide attention and exerted profound influence. This paper first of all introduces and explores the translator's invisibility,a concept put forward by Venuti, and then undergoes a thorough analysis of Venuti's foreignizing translation strategy by elaborating the purposes and the specific methods of this strategy, and by comparing Venuti's domestication and foreignization with domestication and foreignization in traditional sense. Finally, the paper expatiates on the merits and demerits of Venuti's ideas on translation. The study on Venuti's ideas on translation is conducive to a deeper understanding of western translation theories,so as to push the study of translation theory in China onto a new stage.
