Comparison of Leaf Type and Leaf Epidermis Features from Different Populations of Syzygium grijsii in Fujian

Abstract

The diversity of leaf type and characters of leaf epidermis from 16 different populations of Syzygium grijsii(Hance) Merr.et Perry in Fujian province were investigated to study its germplasm resources diversity by observing the morphological characters of leaf and micromorphological characters of leaf epidermis.The diversity of leaf type was observed;the main characters such as leaf length,leaf width were measured;the characters of leaf epidermis from different populations of Syzygium grijsii were examined both under LM and SEM.The shape of the leaves from Minxi population is broad ellipse,and the shape of the leaves from Mindong,Minbei and Minnan populations is long ellipse.The leaf epidermis features of 16 different populations are the same on epidermal hairs,ornamentation of cuticular membrane,indexes of stomata.But the patterns of anticlinal wall of epidermal cells are sinuate,sinuolate,straight or bow in different populations.So we have a conclusion that the adjuncts of the leaf epidermis are so discrepant in different populations that the characters of the pattern of anticlilnal wall can't be used for identification of the genera and species.
