Abstract

Objective: To investigate the role and clinical significance of serum MMP-3 and TIMP-1 in chronic hepatitis B and liver cirrhosis. Methods: Serum MMP-2, TIMP-1 levels were measured by ELISA in 30 patients with chronic hepatitis B and 30 patients with liver cirrhosis and 32 healthy persons. Results: The level of MMP-2, and TIMP-1 in patients with chronic hepatitis B and liver cirrhosis were higher than those of control (P0.05). The level of MMP-2, and TIMP-1 in patients with liver cirrhosis were higher than those of patients with chronic hepatitis (P0.05). Conclusion: Serum levels of MMP-2 may be able to detect liver cirrhosis. Serum levels of TIMP -1 may be an indicator of chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis.
