Abstract
Objective: To investigate the changes of serum insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) levels in patients with essential hypertension (EH) and assess the pathophysiologic significance of IGF-1 in hypertension patients with left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) . Methods: Serum IGF-1 levels were measured by specific radioimmunoassay in 50 EH patients and in 25 normotensive controls. Results: The results showed that serum IGF-1 level were higher in EH than normal controls (12. 86 ± 3. 67 vs 9. 67±2. 57, P0. 01) . The IGF-1 Serum level were higher in EH with LVH than in those without LVH (14. 15 ± 4. 23 vs 11. 57 ± 3. 10, P0. 01) . Conclusion: These results indicate that serum IGF-1 levels are increased in essential hypertension, especially in EH with LVH.It also suggest that IGF-1 may involve hypertension and hypertensive cardiac hypertrophy.
