Abstract
Purpose To investigate the therapeutic effect of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty(UPPP)on obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome(OSAHS).Methods Two hundred patients with OSAHS(obstruction at the oropharyn- geal level)were divided into mild(91 cases),moderate(69 cases)and severe(40 cases)group based on polysomno- graphy.UPPP was performed in all patients under general anesthesia in order to enlarge the pharyngeal cavity.Results All patients were followed up for 6 to 12 months.The amelioration rate for mild and moderate group was 93.41% and 94.20% respectively,which were significantly higher than that for severe group(x~2 = 25.3,P0.01;x~2 = 23.9,P 0.01).Conclusions UPPP under general anesthesia is a safe and effective treatment for OSAHS.(Chin J Ophthalmol and Otorhinolaryngo1,2007,7.375-376)
