Abstract

Vermibiofilter,an artificial ecosystem composed of earthworms, microorganisms and substrate,is a new green technology for treatment of domestic sewage.Under the conditions of hydraulic load 0.53 m3/(m2·d),earthworm load 4.63 g earthworm/L soil, and wet/dry ratio 1 ∶5,four kinds of media(soil, sand, gravel and cobble) were utilized in the vermifiltration system to treat domestic sewage. The results show that the vermibiofilter has good treatment efficiency. There is a strong linear relationship between the concentrations of COD,TP and NH+4-N in the influent and the removal load.During the stabilized operation, the removal rates of COD,NH+4-N and TP are 72.92% to 93.33%,72.66% to 99.03% and 59.79% to 96.49% respectively. The technology has advantages of simple process, good treatment efficiency, easy operation and no excess sludge generation.
