Abstract

Objective To explore the risk factors of hemorrhagic cerebral infarction and the influence of hemorrhagic transformation on short-term prognosis of cerebral infarction. Methods Sixty-five consecutive patients with hemorrhagic cerebral infarction from our hospital during 1990~1999 were retrospectively analyzed.Logistic regression model was employed to find out the risk factors of hemorrhagic transformation and to evaluate the influence of hemorrhagic transformation on short-term prognosis of cerebral infarction. Results Cerebral embolism, involvement of cerebral cortex, young onset age between 50 and 60 years, and hyperglycemia were identified as independent risk factors for hemorrhagic transformation of cerebral infarction. The short-term prognosis of patients with hemorrhagic transformation was better than those without hemorrhage after other related factors were controlled. Conclusions Cerebral embolism and large infarct volume were main causes of hemorrhagic transformation.Hyperglycemia, antithrombotic therapy and young age also increased the risk of hemorrhagic cerebral infarction. When no hematoma formed, hemorrhage would not worsen the prognosis.
