Abstract

Objective To access the effect of sternocleidomastoid muscle flap in the restoration of sunken deformity of face and preventing Frey's syndrome after parotidectomy.Methods Paticnts with benign parotid tumors(120 cases)were selected and randomly divided into experimental group(60 cases)and control group(60 cases).The control group were treated with traditional parotidectomy,while patients in experimental group were treated with modified parotidectomy including repairng the soft tissue defects by sternocleidomastoid muscle flap.Results Sunken deformities were significant in control group(100%),incidence rate of Frey's syndrome was 83.33%(50/60).While there were no obvious sunken deformities in experimental group(96.67%),incidence rate of Frey's syndrome was 11.67%(7/60),and siginificently lower than that of control group(P0.01).Conclusion Sternocleidomastoid muscle flap is effective to correct the deformity of the face after parotidectomy and decrease the occurrence of Frey's syndrome.
