Abstract
Objective To investigate the clinical observation of sternocleidomastoid muscle flap for operation on parotid benign tumor in the prevention of Frey syndrome. Methods 138 cases with parotid benign tumors were randomly divided into control group and experimental group. The patients in control group were treated with traditional parotidectomy, while the patients in experimental group were treated with modified parotidectomy including repairing the soft tissue defects by sternocleidomastoid muscle flap.Patients were followed for 3-12 months. Results The Frey syndrome occurs rate was 33.33% in the control group, the occurs rate was 9.88% in the experimental group. There were significant lower rates on sunken deformities and Frey syndrome in experimental groups than that of control group(P0.01).The effects of sternocleidomastoid muscle flap combined with parotid fascia flap were better. Conclusion The sternocleidomastoid muscle flap transfer can obviously improve post-operative deformity and has a good effect on prevent the incidence of Frey syndrome.
