Abstract

It is only by locating Hu Shi and the Neo\|culture Movement in the whole setting of the 20th century culture transformation that their historic place, meaning and value can be acknowledged. From the late Qing Dynasty to the May 4th Movement, modern thought subjects and values had changed tremendously. The thought subjects during the late Qing Dynasty are based on a modern \!country\, but the intellectuals during the May 4th Movement are concerned about the individual freedom and individual liberation. Discussion on human values, virginity and female problems is, in fact, a cultural criticism of the traditional whole, a rediscovery and creation of the individual and a reconstruction of a deep socialist revolution and value. Discussion on Hu Shi's thoughts, speeches and his assimilation, adoption, sorting of the national treasures from this perspective can be considered as a model.
