Abstract

Objective To investigate the role of extracellular matrix degradation in glioma.Methods 23 patients with grade Ⅲ -Ⅳ glioma and 13 patients with grade Ⅰ - Ⅱ glioma were selected and normal brain tissues were obtained during operation. Total RNA was isolated and gelatinase B ( MMP9) gene expression level was measured by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction. Results The gelatinase B (MMP9 ) gene expression level in grade Ⅲ-Ⅳ glioma tissue( 1.77 ± 0.55) was much higher than that in grade Ⅲ-Ⅳ glioma(0.63 ± 0.11) and normal brain tissue(0.46 ± 0.08). MMP9 gene expression level had strong correlation with the grade of histological diferentiation and no correlation with tumor size. Conclusion Gelatinase B may play an important role in the progression of glioma.
