Abstract

Objective To investigate the hearing improvement following surgical treatment in patients with choronic otitis media.MethodsOne hundred and forty-eight cases of chronic otitis media were followed up retrospectively 1 year after surgery from March 2007 to May 2008. Ninety-eight of the cases were performed with ossicluar reconstruction,in which 84 cases were implanted PORP,3 cases TORP and 11 cases autocartilage. ResultsAir bone gaps for the above three types of ossicluar reconstruction were 55.95%,54.5% and 66.7% respectively. The extrusion rate was estimated as 1.1%.A statistic significance of hearing result was found when comparing unilateral COM with bilateral COM(P=0.048).ConclusionsSurgery could improve hearing and prevent relapse obviously in patients with chronic otitis media. Cartilage was recommended to be placed between eardrum and the prosthesis. Follow-up should be emphasized in patients with bilateral chronic otitis media.
