Relationship between BMI,WHR and hypertension among staff in university

Abstract

Objective To investigate the relationship between body mass index(BMI),waist to hip ratio(WHR) and blood pressure levels and the prevalence of hypertension among the faculty of Zhengzhou university.Methods We analyzed the medical data of 2 668 staff's healthy check-up collected in 2008.The analysis of relevant risk factors was conducted with logistic regression.Results The overall prevalence of hypertension was 17.2%,with a significant higher prevalence in the male(21.0%) compared to that in the female(15.8%,P=0.000).The average level of blood pressure and rate of hypertension increased significantly with the increment of age(P0.01).Compared to the staff with nomal BMI and WHR,the blood pressure levels of the staff with overweight,obesity,and abdominal obesity were significantly higher(P0.01),and also the rate of hypertension(P0.01).The resrults of multiple logistic regression showed that age,BMI,and WHR were independent risk factors for hypertension,with relative risks of 1.051(95% confidence interval =1.041-1.060),1.216(95%CI=1.170-1.264) and 94.291(95%CI=8.147-1091.264).Conclusion The BMI and WHR are closely related to the prevalence of hypertension among the faculty of university.
