Abstract
From the relation between and meaning,we can find that the process of generation of literary meaning consists of three stages: author's endowment of literary meaning, text's transmition of literary meaning and audience and critic's interpretation of literary meaning. As far as the first stage is concerned, ancients in China have opinion of as means while the westerners agree to language ontology and think that meaning of literature is produced in itself. As far as the second stage is concerned, ancients in China take image to transmit meaning of text while the westerners make great efforts to seek meanings from grammarical and logic structures in order to show the tranferable function of text itself. As far as the third stage is concerned, the ancients in China hold the theory of impliction while the westerners still are sure that literary meaning is produced in the process of interaction of author, text and reader. Therefore, our ancients always regard the three stages as a whole while the westerners make further researches into them.
