Abstract

Objective To evaluate the clinical application of noninvasive nasal mask bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP) ventilation in the treatment of acute cardiogenic pulmonary edema. Methods Forty patients with acute cardiogenic pulmonary edema(ACPE) were treated with noninvasive nasal mask BiPAP ventilation. Before and after ventilatory support, the heart rate and breathing rate, SpO 2, PaO 2, PaCO 2 and heart function were recorded. Results After 2~5 hours treatment, the heart rate and breathing rate were significantly reduced (p0.001). SpO 2 and PaO 2 were markedly increased(p0.001). PaCO 2 was not changed very much(p0.05). All patients' heart function was markedly improved. Conclusions The noninvasive nasal mask BiPAP is a kind of safe and effective method in the treatment of ACPE. It can be recommended for clinical use.
