Value of BNP and Tei index to diagnosis of early stage of left ventricular diastolic dysfunction in essential hypertensive patients

Abstract

Objective To explore the value of B-natriuretic peptide(BNP) and Tei index to assessing early stage of left ventricular diastolic dysfunction in essential hypertension(EH).Methods Eighty-three hospitalized patients with EH were divided into two groups:35 patients with diastolic dysfunction(DHF group),48 patients with normal diastolic function(NHF group),and other 20 healthy volunteers were selected as control group.The plasma BNP level was measured by chemiluminescent immunoassay.At the same time the parameters including left atrial and left ventricular end-diastolic diameter,left ventricular end-systolic diameter,interventricular septal thickness,left ventricular posterior wall thickness,isovolumic contraction time,isovolumic relaxation time and left ventricular ejection fraction were measured,and the value of Tei index was calculated. Results The level of plasma Tei index and BNP value increased significantly in DHF group,compared with the control group and NHF group(P0.01).Similarly,both Tei index and BNP in NHF group were significantly higher than those in control group(P0.05,P 0.01).Comparing these two measures in diagnosis of early diastolic dysfunction,BNP showed significantly advantageous than Tei index in both sensitivity and specificlty(P0.05).Conclusions Both BNP and Tei index are sensitive indexes for diagnosis of early diastolic dysfunction in EH. BNP may be a biochemical index more effective and accurate than Tei index for diagnosis of early diastolic dysfunction.
