Abstract
The surface chemical properties of activated carbon have serious influence on its adsorption performance. The purpose of studies on the surface modification of activated carbon lies in making clear the effect of chemical (factors) in order to provide the basis for carbon choosing and the direction of carbon activation and modification. The results showed that the acid surface functional groups of activated carbon increased significantly by oxidation with H_2SO_4.The carbon surface became more hydrophilic low pH_(pzc) value. Therefore, the adsorption capacity of phenol on modified carbon was seriously affected.
